Little (Rockin’) Drummer Boy!
I’m going to omit our usual Wednesday TEDTalks episode for a week or two to make a little more room for holiday cheer. Today’s feature…a modern day – and rockin’ – little drummer boy named Sean Quigley.
Sean, a native of Winnipeg, put together a very fun – and very well made – video of his version of the “The Little Drummer Boy.” What’s kind of amazing is that he plays all the instruments as well as produced the video. And his exuberance as a drummer is, well, seriously fun. As he said in an interview with the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp) last year shortly after the video went up and went viral, “Drummer Boy speaks to me so much. The whole song is a story. It’s about this boy who gets word of Jesus being born and he goes to see him and he doesn’t have anything to give him; he’s like ‘I don’t have money, I don’t have gifts to give you. But I can play my drum and that’s…enough’.” I couldn’t agree more.
The claymation version of the Little Drummer Boy was always one of my favorites as a kid, and I love what Sean’s done with the song, particularly as he walks the streets of Winnipeg and features greetings from his fellow residents representing some of the diversity of that fair city. Yes, all are invited to come adore the Christ child, all have something to give, and whatever you can offer is enough.
Enjoy!

I kept wondering if his drum set suffered permanent snow damage. It’s something that Canadian percussionists have to take seriously. 🙂
By the way, I first heard about Sean’s video via MinistryMatters.com. Thanks for sharing it, David!
