Holy Week in 2 Minutes
Ever wonder why there are so many special services during Holy Week? Or why we wave palms on Palm Sunday? Or the significance of the foot washing on Maundy Thursday? Well, the folks at Busted Halo have put together another great video to help explain all these things and more…and all in under two minutes!
As with their other videos, this one is creative, fast-paced, fun, and presents things from the Roman Catholic perspective. While Protestants share many of the same traditions around Holy Week, I was struck by the connection between Maundy Thursday and the priesthood and interested to learn about the veneration of the cross on Good Friday. Both of these were new to me and I was glad to learn about them. I hope this enriches both your understanding of — and participation in — Holy Week!

The one thing that strikes me- in the Luke account, people gather in v.37 because of the great deeds they had seen him do. They gathered, perhaps because they believed him to be the Messiah, but not the Messiah they saw, but the one they expected to see.
Luke’s story over the last several weeks has been about people not seeing what Jesus is up to/what God is about… and this entry account in Luke is the pinnacle point of that- they gather together, cheer, scream, wave, and all for the wrong reason. They want a Messiah going in to oust Rome, when that’s never what he has been about… That’s not what makes for peace in heaven.
Gathering all the children to himself like a mother hen- that’s what makes for peace. Finding the outcast and embracing them- that’s what makes for joy. Death at the hands of those in power- that’s what makes for the Messiah Jesus was & is.
