Stephen Colbert’s Favorite Bible Verse
I am a huge fan of Stephen Colbert. I think he’s incredibly smart and incredibly funny. Along with John Stewart, Colbert has elevated satirical humor to the level of art form that Mark Twain would have admired. Plus, you’ve got to admire – or, at least I marvel at – how he has maintained a three-dimensional media persona – and a completely different private (i.e., real) life – for years on end. I can’t wait to see what happens when he goes to the Late Show.
In the meantime, it’s also interesting to know that he’s a faithful Christian. And – if you’ll watch the six-minute interview with Father James Martin below – you’ll hear the bearded Colbert name his favorite saint, favorite Scripture passage (and notice how he whips it out), and favorite hymn. And then you’ll even hear him riff on contemporary hymns. Enjoy.

Thanks for the great insights and stimulation each day!
I watch Colbert as much as possible. No matter the topic he “gets it.”
What a hoot! Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Quoted him on Sunday, as one of the suggested hymns was O Come O Come Emmanuel, related to the Ten Commandments. I saw a couple people perk up and pay special attention.
I know that song they were singing at the end!! We used to sing it in my high school fellowship in Colorado – a while ago.
I am so grateful for this clip and am amazed that Colbert did not go into ministry. Of course, it could be argued that he *did*. I love that he is a stealth Christian!
Thank you for this, David!
Thanks, David! This put a big smile on my face this morning.
I love Colbert, Here I am Lord and Dune! Thank you for this treat this morning.
nice way to begin the day. Wake up and smile.
Blessings,
