501! – Presenting Tim Wengert
If you happen to be in or near the Twin Cities September 30 or October 1, I want to invite you to Mount Olivet Lutheran Church (5025 Knox Ave., Mpls) for several events featuring Dr. Timothy J. Wengert, Emeritus Professor of Reformation History at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. Beyond being a world-renowned Reformation scholar and the author or editor of more than 20 books, Tim is one of the finest teachers in the church today. He was my advisor and mentor while I was a student at LTSP and the most important and influential teacher in my career. If you’re in the neighborhood, I hope you’ll come by. And feel free to send this on to others who may be interested!
On Sunday, September 30, at 4:00 p.m., Tim will offer a presentation entitled 501 Years of Reformation—Big Deal, Little Deal or No Deal? Here’s the description: After last year’s blow out for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Lutherans are tired out, the city of Wittenberg has fewer tourists, and the media have moved back to following the Kardashians—or worse. Despite our collective exhaustion, the Reformation remains the single-most important event in the history of the Christian Church and for your life. Prof. Wengert will show participants how the Reformation still matters today, even without all the hoopla.
This presentation is geared for all – clergy, lay; young, old; Lutheran, just curious about Luther! It should last about 40-50 minutes, no registration is necessary, and the event is free.
After Tim’s presentation, we are inviting all young adults (roughly 21-45) to follow us over to Wild Minds Brewery to continue the conversation, press Tim (and each other!) a little more on why the Reformation matters, and sing some hymns. Again, no registration necessary.
On Monday, October 1, Tim will present two sessions for clergy on preaching: Distinguishing Law and Gospel: The Best Kept Secret in the Lutheran Church. Again, the description: From Jeremiah to Paul to Augustine to Luther, the very best preachers have always known how to tell two truths to their people: the truth about the human condition and the truth about God’s mercy. Prof. Wengert will use his life-long interest in early Lutheran biblical interpretation to help participants to discover both what the biblical text does to us and how to “do unto others” the very same thing. While registration isn’t required, it would be helpful for us in planning snacks/coffee.
Once again, this event is also free. The tentative schedule is as follows:
- Doors open: 9:00 a.m.
- Presentation 1: 9:30-10:15am
- Coffee/Snack Break: 10:15-10:45am
- Presentation 2: 10:45-11:30am
Both events will be held in the new rehearsal/lecture hall in the east wing. There is ample parking and there will be signs and greeters to make sure you find your way to us.
Again, please come if you’re able and/or share news of these free events with others. All these presentations are made possible through the generous stewardship and outreach of Mount Olivet Lutheran Church.
