When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible distress.” And he said to him, “I will come and cure him.” The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but...
ITM Technical Difficulties & Update

Just a quick blog update. Actually, two: 1) Late last week I somehow lost all my subscribers. I use Google’s Feedburner utility which allows folks to subscribe, emails the posts daily to subscribers, and manages those subscriptions. Somehow, all 4500 subscribers got wiped away last week. I’m trying to figure it out, but for now that means no daily blog updates are reaching anyone. I have, at the moment, no idea how to remedy this, but I’ll let you know when I figure it out. 2) I’ve got a crazy busy – and very exciting – week coming. This Tuesday and Wednesday I’ll be on the campus of The Lutheran...
The 23rd Psalm on Mother’s Day

What would you dedicate to your mother? Mother’s Day is, of course, just around the corner. It’s a day – along with Father’s Day – that I’m a tad ambivalent about. While not actually invented by Hallmark, as the common lore has it, the day’s founder – Anna Jarvis – soon became quite resentful of how Hallmark and others exploited the day to their gain. Given that history, one wonders why we need a special day to honor our mothers (or fathers) – I mean, why not honor them every day? At the same time, I think I have a great mom (and dad!), and I think my wife, my sisters, and my...

When Jesus had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him; and there was a leper who came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean.” He stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I do choose. Be made clean!” Immediately his...
Changing Together

One of the really interesting side discoveries of the research we did as part of the Vibrant Congregations Project is that it’s really hard to change alone. Maybe I should back up a bit to put this more in context. The Vibrant Congregations Project was a research endeavor generously funded by the Lilly Endowment to help a team from Luther Seminary investigate what contributed to congregational vitality and vibrancy. Partnering with congregations all over the U.S. and Canada, we studied four dimensions of congregational life – stewardship, vocation (connecting faith and daily life), biblical preaching, and biblical fluency (patterns of...

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all...
Parenting Beyond Happiness
posted by DJL
Ask most parents what they most hope for their child, and one of the immediate answers will be that we want our children to be happy. Sometimes that’s intensified, as in, “While I hope they find a good job and lead a good life, all I really want is for my child is happy.” That goal and desire, as Jennifer Senior explains, is so ingrained in current parenting culture that we don’t even question it. But maybe we should. Just as we were willing to ask whether happiness is a goal or a by-product, so also might we question what the primary role, responsibility and goal of parenting is. Because if you believe that...

While they were going, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests everything that had happened. After the priests had assembled with the elders, they devised a plan to give a large sum of money to the soldiers, telling them, ‘You must say, “His disciples came by...

I’m at a meeting of the Board of Lutheran World Relief. So I don’t have a lot of time to write, but I do have a plenty of time to be in awe; in fact, I find myself in awe almost all the time while I’m here. In awe of the faithfulness and effectiveness of this talented, dedicated, and diverse staff that has committed itself to Micah’s injunction to “do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God” (6:8); In awe of the reach of the organization as it makes a difference in the lives of people, literally, all over the world. In awe of the impact and responsiveness of LWR to emergency...

Suddenly Jesus met them and said, ‘Greetings!’ And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshipped him. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.’ There is a sense in which Matthew is, if not “fixing,” at...
