I’ve been thinking a lot of late about the internet. In particular, about time spent on the internet. Maybe it’s all the blogging of late :), but I think it’s even more paying attention as my kids (now in 6th and 8th grade) feel more and more pressure to join in the social media world that many of their friends have already and enthusiastically entered. In this regard, two recent pieces have caught my attention. The first is the cover story of this month’s Atlantic which asks the question, “Is Facebook Making us Lonely?” The answer, in case you don’t want to read the whole article, is a qualified yes. Essentially, according...
ITM: The Song
posted by DJL
Who knew there was a song called “In the Meantime”? Actually, maybe you did :), but I didn’t. So it was a treat to hear Peter Mayer – lead guitarist for Jimmy Buffett – and Scott Kirby play an extended version of the song, complete with a medley of other favorites...
The Descendants

I am writing from Hawaii. Oahu, to be exact, and so it seems timely to write about The Descendants. I know it came out last December and was released to DVD a month or more ago, but I can’t stop thinking about it, even when I’m not in Hawaii. Why? Because this film, as much as any that has...
Easter

Frank created and runs the website Postsecret.com where people anonymously send him a secret about themselves they haven’t told anyone. In this TEDTalk, Frank shares some of those secrets and talks a bit about how the sharing of secrets has rippled out in interesting, unpredictable, and often wonderful ways. We all have secrets, some that perhaps we’ll never share. And that’s important to remember. I suspect that we we think of any given person, we tend to think that the person we see – at work, or school, or church…or even at home – is the whole person....
Sistine Chapel Virtual Tour
posted by DJL
To aid in Sabbath rest and reflection, I usually only post a prayer for the day on Sundays, something connected to one of the appointed readings. But I stumbled on this last night and couldn’t wait to share it. It’s a virtual 3D tour of the Sistine Chapel that the Vatican has produced. It’s almost like being there. Actually, given the music, lack of crowds, and ability to zoom in on some of the most famous paintings in Western history, it might just be better than being there. 🙂 If you want to visit, click the picture below and then click and slide your cursor in the direction you want to move; the zoom controls are at...
