Som Sabadell Flash Mob
I’ll admit it: I’m a sucker for cultural flashmob events. I know they’re contrived – how else do you get the great footage? – but I still love the way they startle a random group of people and bring them together as a group, a body, joined partly, I’m sure, by curiosity but also, I think, be the sheer beauty of the event. In this case that event is a 100 member orchestra playing Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” It was sponsored by Banco Sabadell, Spain’s fifth largest bank, this past May to sponsor the 130th anniversary of its founding.
Another favorite flashmob was the dance of “Do Re Mi” (from the Sound of Music) in Central Station of Antewrp, Belgium, that included more than 200 dancers who only rehearsed twice before pulling this off:
And, of course, the creme de la creme (in my humble opinion 🙂 ) of all flashmobs was the performance of the Hallelujah Chorus in the food court of a shopping mall in November of 2010. Given that more than 38 million people have seen it, I suspect you have too! But just in case you haven’t….

David,
I think what I like best is the pure joy happening. Planned joy-bringing, to be sure, but both listeners and performers seem to have great delight in their participation!
It’s a grey, cold day here, and these glorious musical gifts burst like bright flowers into my ordinary schedule. Thank you!
How joyful and beautiful!!! Thank you.
Part of what makes a congregation is the sense of fellowship and community. We are often drawn into The Church by a need of some kind. What keeps us there is that sense of belonging to the body. And when the body celebrates – then we create the same sense we see here: amazement, joy, awe.
My heart jumps for joy at such moments. (Especially Events like the ordination of four of my seminary schoolmates last night)
But when such things come as a surprise, like they do here: the onlookers are lifted outside of themselves.
If we can find ways to do worship like this: imagine! Thank you for giving me something new to think about
I love to watch the flash mobs. I have not seen one personally but it is pure joy just for the fun of it. Since we just past Independence day how about the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Flash mob at Colonial Williamsburg. The singing starts near 3.20. Enjoy.

Something in my eye….To see people “surprised by Joy” and to watch the children dance and wave their arms—The Joy found its way to me too.
Touching demonstrations of unity in a world of disunity and unevenness.
I love flash mobs too and these are also my favorites ! You might also check out the Russian wedding one on the riverbank.
